It's simple (like GAYtor) .. if you don't sell an "asset" you have no tax ramifications .. for a gain or a loss.
Switzerland, that well known bastion of socialism and poverty, has a progressive wealth tax covering all assets.

As I understand it in the USA there is an extremely complex wealth tax collected on real estate.

If I had a choice I would rather the taxes on my home were reduced and taxes on other assets increased.

Absolutely I think they are exceptions, most of today’s super rich one would move suburbs to avoid.

I quite like buffet’s value system and haven’t heard of any criminal activity behind his fortune.

On the other hand the vast majority of aristocratic wealthy families in the UK ( my country of origin) built their fortune on what now would be considered gaolable crimes.
